New York Times reports that Blizzard plans to announce its PC MMORPG's jump to the big screen on Tuesday.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot

World of Warcraft has been rumored to be jumping platforms to the Xbox 360 for some time, but if The New York Times is correct, the next jump it makes will instead be to the world of film.

The Times is reporting that Blizzard will announce Tuesday that its massively successful, massively multiplayer online role-playing game is set to be made into a big-budget fantasy picture along the lines of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films, with Warner Bros.' Legendary Pictures handling the production.

Director, cast, release date, and budget are all undetermined as of yet, but the paper quotes Blizzard CEO Paul Sams as saying that the goal is to make "one of the best films in the world," a World of Warcraft pic that will appeal to gamers and non-gamers alike. He said Legendary Pictures management was keenly attuned to what Blizzard wanted out of a World of Warcraft film. Legendary's first film was Batman Begins. Other projects being brought to the big screen by Legendary Pictures include Superman Returns, The Ant Bully, Where the Wild Things Are, and Frank Miller's 300.

I heard that the movie is 2.5 hours, one static shot; a naked 500 pound shut-in, back-lit by the flickering blue of his PC, eating a garbage bag full of Cheetos

I played Warcraft and Warcraft 2 way back when and absolutely loved them. There is a richness and a depth to that world that would lend itself to an LOTR-style film rather well.

Should be much fun.

Make one of the "best films in the world" from a game that practically plagiarises its material from other sources. Very funny.

It's well known that the Warcraft world is a mish mash of several different sources. Coming from someone that plays World of Warcraft (yeah, i'm not proud of it either), this saddens me, but considering their subscriber base, it's probably going to make money.

Oh well, Blizzard's art team is pretty incredible, if they get to pretty up the movie like they do the game, at least it will LOOK nice...

If they cast Scarlett Johanson, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Monica Belucci, Catherine-Zeta Jones, Lindsay Lohan and Maggie Q...all dancing topless...then it would be the "best movie in the world."

Yes, the nerds will make this a worldwide blockbuster bonanza. It will revitalize the movie industry. All of its unknown and b-list actors will become mega-stars soon to command 20 million per picture, 15 for the female stars, of course.

i am 100% uninspired by this news. i'd be more interested if i heard there was a "Hawk: The Slayer" remake coming out.

the lack of an eye in Hollywood for video game material that would translate into a good movie never ceases to frustrate and disappoint me. i think anyone who has ever played any of the "Thief" (first two on PC, 3rd one on PC/console) games would agree the lead character, the art design and style of the world, the storylines, and overall tone really lend themelves to something different and very entertaining for a cinematic experience. think a pseudo-medieval setting, with dashes of 19th century tech, a little magic, a little pagan worship, some zombies for good measure, and a master thief main character. not much of a description, actually, really doesn't it do it justice. anyway, i have yet i to see it even mentioned in passing as a potential game-to-be-adapted, while other lame games that made even lamer movies have gotten their shot.

i agree, first time i ever saw it was when the local cbs affiliate played it for their late late movie one weekend, when i was about 13, and i thought it was one of the coolest friggin movies i had ever seen. i wonder if it will ever come out on dvd? if it does i'll be sure to buy it and share it with my kids, i know they'd get as much of a kick out of it as i did.

i think "Hawk: The Slayer" doesn't get the credit it deserves for being the original Dungeons and Dragons movie, before there was Dungeons and Dragons. ironically, aside from LOTR which doesn't count, Hawk is also the best Dungeons and Dragons movie made to date as well, imo.

you know what? i think Guillermo del Toro could make a killer remake of "Hawk: the Slayer". he isn't afraid to kill off any and everyone, so the final battle would retain the tragic quality of the original, and by the looks of "Pan's Labrynth" i'd day he could create the right overall tone too. now, who would play the Jack Palance role in the updated version? who would play Hawk? the elf? the dwarf? the giant?

Picked this up from GameSpot today.

Gamespot wrote:Spielberg to WOW filmgoers? Source: Reports on numerous film- and game-fan sites, including Joblo.com, which cited a report in Variety.

The official story: See below.

What we heard: At the 76th Annual Academy Awards, legendary director Steven Spielberg handed out the Best Picture statue to The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. It was the first fantasy film to ever win the top Oscar, and Spielberg heaped praise on the picture and its director, Peter Jackson, both during and after the ceremony. "It's a great day for fantasy and fantasy fans," he told reporters at the post-awards press conference.

Spielberg's comments seemed ironic, as he himself has never directed a high-fantasy movie. Though his futuristic sci-fi efforts are myriad, including War of the Worlds and Minority Report, the closest he has ever come to fantasy are the supernatural-themed Indiana Jones adventures, the schmaltzy romance Always, and the children's film Hook.

So when reports attributed to Variety claimed that Spielberg was getting on board the recently announced World of Warcraft movie, it struck many as the perfect fit. Besides being an avid gamer who attends E3 every year, Spielberg has also had a long-term relationship with Universal Pictures, which used to be a subsidiary of media conglomerate Vivendi. Vivendi is the current owner of WOW developer-publisher Blizzard Entertainment.

Alas, like so many things that sounded to good be true, the Spielberg rumor was just that. Today's issue of Variety contains no articles on a WOW movie, and no article in its archives has Spielberg mentioned as being involved in the project. By the afternoon, several sites like Joblo had retracted the rumor, although others continued to parrot is as gospel.

For its part, Blizzard would only say no World of Warcraft director has yet been chosen. "No final determinations have been made at this time," a rep told GameSpot. "We’re working closely and carefully with [production company] Legendary Pictures on ensuring that the team that forms around this epic production will be equipped to fully capture the Warcraft universe on film. We look forward to revealing further details about the cast and crew in the months ahead."

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus for now--but one can dream, can't one?

Could be good.

Douche.

I only just saw this story, but I'm very, very excited. I was a big fan of Warcraft II back when. Haven't played any of the game since then, but I have a fondness for the world. Should be a big, bold epic with plenty of room for Spielberg to riff and play.

Well it reached H@rry, but it is definatly not true.

H@rry wrote:Harry – Just yesterday there was an announcement that Spielberg was going to be making that movie.

Harry – (giggling) I’m totally serious.

Brandon – (to his girlfriend – away from phone – and with an enthusiasm I haven’t heard from him) SPIELBERG IS DOING WARCRAFT!

(Girlfriend) – WHAAAAAAA?!?!?!?! Oh my god!

(I begin laughing)

Brandon: (like when he’s talking to Luthor – totally serious) Producing? Or Directing? My girlfriend is…

Harry – Allegedly directing.

Brandon – (to girlfriend) Allegedly Directing. (to me) Well… That… is… Interesting… (following was… giggly) We’ll be talking to, ummm, Legendary… about that.

Harry – Absolutely! Well as soon as I read the news, knowing that you were a Warcraft guy, I just had to bring it up cuz you’re the title character of Legendary’s biggest film to date and that’s their movie.

Brandon – Yeah, I know. They told me they went down and met with BLIZZARD’s guys, that’s pretty… that’s interesting.

Harry – Get your agent on it immediately.

Brandon – YEAH! My manager is right here, he’s perked up.

HARRY HERE: The WORLD OF WARCRAFT rumor was first spotted on JoBlo.com that cited VARIETY as their source. Since then, this has been proven wrong. Moriarty spoke with a source at LEGENDARY who debunked the rumor.

Well according to the main page, there was some sort of convention where they announced that this movie was moving forward with a planned budget of $100 million+ and a 2009 release date.

All I have to say is, good luck with that...

Here's the pre-production artwork they showed at the Con:

Bump-a-chump!

AICN Exclusive Confirmed: Sam Raimi is going to direct WORLD OF WARCRAFT!!!

Harry wrote:Well, I don't have concept art. I don't have the firm release date, but I do know who is directing the WORLD OF WARCRAFT film and that is Sam Raimi. It will come out in trades later this week or next. But you can take this one to the bank. Sam is going to make a huge budget fantasy bit of unfuckingimaginable coolness - and it will be yanked from the WORLD OF WARCRAFT.
Thank you, Zoners, for the kindness, tolerance, and enlightenment you've shared with me. It may not have been deserved, but it was greatly appreciated nonetheless. Soupy twist.

I think the point here is not whether you want to see a World of Warcraft movie, it's whether you have room for another Fantasy adventure movie.
I doubt I'm going to care much about this, whether it be Raimi or not. I'm not expecting a great story but some kick ass action would be good to watch.

I'm guessing there's going to be a ton of in jokes which I'm not going to get because I hate fucking WoW and don't intend to pay the exhorbitant rental fee.

Didn't he turn it down? At least I remember that Jackson & Co. really wanted him
Anyway, I'm not a WOW fan, but it can't be worse than the uninspired 30 minute commercial that the South Park episode was. It just makes me sad that Pretty much 20 times more viewers will probably see this in its first weekend, than Drag Me To Hell in its entire theatrical rn.

Unless Blizzard are Syphoning off cash to make this film I don't see if having the $100 million price attached that it did in 2007.

Those days are over.

Welcome back to rubber suits, carboard shields and REAL weathedr conditions.

Right, are we sure it's a wow movie & not just a Warcraft movie?
The universe has a fuck tonne going on & it'd be pretty foolish to just base it on the mmo.

EDIT:
BLIZZARD wrote: Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the eagerly-anticipated major motion picture based on Blizzard Entertainment’s award-winning Warcraft® universe. Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content.

Yeah, it's the universe.
You may want to remove "World of" from the title.

Well, the first Warcraft game came out in 1994 & was RTS.
It had a few sequels & updates.

World of Warcraft is an MMO that came out 10 years after that. It's the 4th game in the franchise.
The events in the game take place about 2 years after Warcraft 3.

But conceptually speaking, they are similar, right? Warcraft is Warcraft? It's not like one had a focus on sea elves and the other focused on talking dragons or something, right?

The first game was about Humans Vs Orcs.
It's plot is referred to as The Great War in the Warcraft mythology.

The second game introduced Elves & various other, erm, races(?) into the mix.

The games do focus on different events.
As do the books.
The MMO, being an MMO, is a lot less focused on a single plotline.

It's a bit like if Warner announced they were making a Command & Conquer movie & everyone started calling it Tiberian Sun: The Movie.
Well, the C&C games have all been RTS so far, but i mean more from a story standpoint.

Not really.
I was never huge on RTS games.
Turn-based games like Civ were more my cup of tea.

But I think most 90's PC gamers had at least heard of Warcraft & Starcraft, if not played them.

If you o the first game, as you say, which is humans Vs Orcs, at least that gives room to build a story.

If you were going to make this work, you'd have a trilogy of films first of all, concerning different wars and different characters but having some over arching story arch about a super villain or conqueror. Then you'd have a film where they all met up to fight some end of level boss and win the day for the world ;) See what I did there? I'm as smart as Paul WS Anderson now.

Whatever happens, the comparisons to Lord of the Rings will always be there, and I don't think it will match up.

And of course, this would not look anything like Lord of the Rings at all. No. Nothing at all. The story is not even close.

Go watch Army of Darkness again & tell me the big battle doesn't look a bit like Helm's Deep in Jackson's The Two Towers.
