K is Katzenberg.
I don't mind Dreamworks or Blue Sky, they're harmless. Robots had some crass jokes, but it was very inventive visually. Not to fond of Madagascar... Shark Tale was horrible... Ice Age was great, don't know about the second. Shrek's 1+2 were quite funny and have proved to have better legs than they should. Not to fond of Disney's in-house offerings so far, although Rapunzal looks like it may turn into something quite special from what I've seen.
Generally, save for the lurid Shark Tale, the design work is always quite nice by these studios. I quite liked some of the simplicity of Madagascar, even if it was a bit videogamey in places, and Chicken Little has some of the best 3D character animation so far. Antz still holds up today, mainly through being quite dark and having some really snide humour... plus some lovely characterisation. Dreamworks should really delve back into what made that movie
such a solid experience that didn't feel like a cynical cash in. Trust me, I know of Dreamworks artists, and they quite rightly defend their work. The only thing I feel the art is being wasted on so-so projects.
The only problem is that many of the animated US films outside of Disney/Pixar feel very lowest-common-denominator. I see some dislike I really can't chime with in this thread. Finding Nemo had a lot of warmth, Monsters Inc was beautifully funny and inventive, The Incredibles was full of bounce and imagination, ditto The Toy Story's, A Bugs Life wasn't THAT bad (c'mon, it was charming)... their shorts are second to none. They're at the top of their game and its sad to see them pidgeonholed in this forum in such a crass fashion. Even if you don't like some of their films, you've got to show respect for the long story gestation, the commitment to perfecting and crafting their projects and the love that goes into them...
... as for Cars, I hardly think the reasoning put forward was anything but cynical nonsense. These people spend YEARS devoting script and storyboard time before production, and that's what makes them the giants others seem to stand on the shoulders of.
