After "Justice" they became a different band. It depends on what you prefer. I was a purist and Metallica cutting their hair and playing ballads turned me off to them forever. I would say you can't go wrong with anything before the black album. I hated the Black album but it did seem pretty popular so you might give that a try.

This is making me miss Napster. Remember how good it was back in the day? Nothing has matched it's selection and ease of use yet.

So I was working in a record store when St. Anger came out in 2003. An attractive young woman came in to buy it on the day of its release.

I attempted some small talk. "I haven't heard this yet," I said to her as I rung up her purchase. "You'll have to come back and let me know how it is."

"Oh, I've already heard it," she said. "(The local rock radio station) played the whole thing last night on their Mandatory Metallica. It sucks. But since I already have all the other Metallica discs, I guess I have to buy this one too."

After she left, I wondered -- was someone holding her at gunpoint or something? Why didn't she just stop buying Metallica CDs when they started to suck? The way people did with Sting? It still leaves me scratching my head.

If it says "Produced by Bob Rock" on it anywhere put it down and move on. I'd go with Justice.
