One Briton's complaint looks to change Animation history

Anime, cartoons and 3D. Animated shorts and features. And don't forget the animation genius in Bulgaria.

Should this be allowed to happen?

Sure, why bother teaching our kids right from wrong ourselves

One Briton's complaint looks to change Animation history

Postby King Psyz on Mon Aug 21, 2006 9:37 pm

from Reuters news

So it seems because a character was smoking now they want to have all Hanna Barbara owned cartoons edited for content.

I'm sorry but fuck that, this is the last straw. Learn to be a god damned parent and thicken your fucking skin. Just because I don't agree with many things depicted in early HB cartoons doesn't mean I think they should be altered.

There's rampant racism found in many of the same cartoons but apparently that didn't bother this concearned citizen or the regulator much.

Turner has said they're alreayd moving foward to remove any smoking images from all but a handful of villanous characters, or any scene that fails to put smoking in a negative connotation.

I think they shouldn't force HB to do anything. If HB chooses to do something, then fine. Otherwise, leave their own CREATIVE PROPERTY ALONE. That's what COPYRIGHT LAWS are for. Jesus.

Is anybody else glad that a British person did this? It's usually an American, then all the foreigners on the board make a crack about how dumb we are. To that I say HAH! People are stupid EVERYWHERE! Let's celebrate.

It seems as if people are running out of dumb shit to complain about, so they're just grabbing at straws.

Eh, this happens every now and then. It's not like they're going to destroy the originals.

They have already edited all old Tom and Jerry cartoons in the States by redubbing the housemaid to make her sound less Aunt Jamima/Butterfly McQueen. Plus they have removed a number of "suicide" gags from old WB cartoons. It's sad but you pretty much can't watch old WB or MGM cartoons that are unmolested on broadcast anymore. Thankfully the WB shorts have been getting dvd releases.

I hope they don't destroy the originals, but I hold out little hope.

I learned the art of theft from Yogi Bear and Top Cat.

I learned how to verbally abuse my spouse from Fred Flintstone.

I learned how to shoot first and ask questions later from Quick Draw McGraw.

I learned trespassing and breaking/entering from the Scooby-Doo gang.

I learned that all black people love basketball, courtesy of the Harlem Globetrotters cartoon.

Above all, I learned that there's no need to compete honestly in the real world if you can cheat, thanks to Mumbly and the Really Rottens.

And I turned out fine! Who's censoring what now?

Oh, Tom and Jerry are smokers, apparently. Shit, last I heard, that was still legal.

Thanks to Boomerang, my kids have become big Tom & Jerry fans. I could never stand Tom & Jerry.

Curse you, Boomerang!

My kids see tons of older cartoons and movies that routinely feature smoking (among other things). You know what? They know the difference! They know that smoking is not cool or good for you and seeing cool characters do it doesn't change their opinion. On many occasions, my kids have turned to me and said "I guess this was back when everyone thought smoking was ok, huh?" And I reply "That's right, but we know now that its not good for you." "Right." my kids say. And the world goes on. We enjoy the show together, and its all OK. So there.

What pisses me off most is the notion that I or my children need the "protection" being offered by censoring idiots. I'd like them all to fuck off and stop insulting my intelligence and parenting skills.

Eh, in a world where The Simpsons still gets Emmy Nominations I think anything's fair game.
