The guy is just a simpleton who thinks anything not foregrounded is "subtle" and anything involving dialogue and character is "emotional." I do have to say that watching it through this time made me start to consider where I'd go with the series from here, and there's definitely potential. X3 provided a few too many stumbling blocks for the larger story, but there's plenty of fertile ground to be explored.
