ANT-MAN

All the dirt. All the top secret stuff. Anything that has to do with the process of getting us to sit and watch something projected on the big screen.

ANT-MAN

Postby Adam Balm on Wed Sep 07, 2005 8:00 pm

So, Moriarty's been teasing us for a while on this one, and it looks like here's the big scoop.

IGN FilmForce has learned that British filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) is poised to direct Ant-Man. Wright apparently plans on making Ant-Man a comedy.

So Mori, on the original scoops website, plays all coy, and it is posted the next day at another site anyway...
I really think Harry and co need to have a look at the very concept of their site.

You know, it's possible that not everyone was signed until today. I.e., if Mori opened his mouth too soon, he could have screwed the deal.

Wouldn't be the first time that happened.

I think the bigger news is, I called this.

http://zone.aintitcool.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3247

By the way, it's probably not a done deal. Moriarty didn't report it because he doesn't generally comment on rumors, I don't think, for whatever reason.

Some of the talkbacks on this are interesting:

Funn [sic], a site that is supposed to be about scoops...doesn't have any scoops because the various author's [sic] like to play guessing games with the guy who runs the place? "I know something you don't know".

I know Moriarty has his reasons, I'd just like to see him explain what they were.

I sent him a PM about it. Very respectful, just asking for some insight as to how it works and what the reasoning is behind breaking or not breaking a story. Not sure if he'll respond, but if he does and doesn't post anything about it I'll let you know.

That still doesn't explain why Moriarty didn't break the news. If that's true, it just means that IGN is legally bound to embargo the info until a certain date. It doesn't have anything to do with Mori or AICN.

That said, I think I was a little overly harsh, just because I'm the only Ant Man fan I know, and I would have liked to know this. He doesn't owe anyone an explanation, least of all us. I'm just curious.

Well the embargo makes sense in that Mori and Harry are now PART of the Hollywood machine. If they were to release the details, it might endanger them from getting exclusives in the future. I dunno. I'm just talking out of my ass here. And it stinks.

The point is, if Mori can't talk about it because of any reason, then don't fucking hint. All that does is say 'hey I know stuff, because I am all important, but I ain't telling you rabble nuffin.' Which is absolutely against what AICN was all about. If you can't or are unwilling to give out information you have, then keep quiet. If I wanted all tease and no reveal I would look up that girl I dated in college.
And thus, I will speak of it no more...

So true, so true. Don't tease, especially people who look to you for such information.

It's really not very sinister, guys, and it's not a case of "nyah, nyah, I know something yooooou don't," either.

Edgar's a friend. And when he first told me about ANT-MAN, he swore me to secrecy. This was four or five months ago. Now, when someone mentions ANT-MAN and says, "That's going to suck because that's stupid," I fell compelled to say, "Well, not so fast. You might eat those words when you see who they've signed." Not to gloat, but because I've heard the whole pitch and I know what the film could be if it all comes together. And I genuinely think it sounds like a great take on something that otherwise really doesn't sound very good.

Sometimes, your hands are tied because of the source of how you know something. It's happened before. I'm sure it will happen again. But it's not a case of us ever trying to lord something over you guys at all.

Joe Cornish - of Adam and Joe - is writing the Ant-Man script with Edgar Wright.

Joe's TV partner Adam Buxton can be seen in one of the Hot Fuzz video diaries, briefly.

Adam and Joe used to make a lot of movie rehashes with toys as the stars. A bit like (ahem) the major studios, then.

Is this exciting or what?

I love edgar wright. ANtman is rpetty cool although my knowledge of him is limited to the Ultimates. I can't say I'm that bothered to look into him more. I'll let Edgar Wright do that for me!

But I'm worried that Edgar has picked the wrong film to make his Hollywood debut with! I mean fair on the fucking guy, he's his own person who I'm sure loves Antman and this is a dream come true. He is a cclever chappy so I got no personal grudge and I hope he does well cos he is a very exciting film maker!

BUT will mainstream audiences, the weekender crowd, the "got-to-be-cool" teenage crowd really want to see a film called ANT MAN?

I know for a fact that when I get round to mentioned that to my friends who enjoy films, good films in general may I add, that they will laugh. "Is it a comedy? thatss well funny. A piss take right?"

"Errr, no, Antman is the real thing. His like spiderman... but.... an ant..."

They'll laugh be out a building?

General view: Ants a crap insects.

NOw this ain't me: I WANT IT TO BE HUGE AND ROCK AND ROLL AND I THINK SHRINKING TO THE SIZE OF AN ANT IS COOL AS FUCK!

But will mainstream audiences? This is my question to you....

heh, I can see him making a fun 'lil flick out of Them. So the book is non-fiction, I take it? Could he get the people who Ronson interviewed for the book? Should he? Can you slap a narrative on it and make a story out of it? Lots and lots of ways to approach that project...

I loe edgar wirght and his crew! I iwsh him all the best and I hope Antman is the best and biggest fucking film of all time and makes him the super film guru that we all know he will be

But Antman doesn't couns commercia;l And in Hollywood, unless you're already proven, they can shun you.

Wright with a $100millon budget. Think of how sweet that will be. If he gets Antman to be a success, then you'll get that...

malarkey (and gibberish, but we'll let that slide).

more money doesn't make a better film, or a better film-maker, especially for a satirist. More money often means more problems, more suits breathing down your back...suits who are interested in making money and trying to please the common demoninator.

I want Wright to be successful, sure, so he can make his movies his own damn way. If he wants to do $100million dollar FX bonanza's, so be it. But he can do Pilgrim, Them and two other lower budget flicks for under a $100million. That's 4, count 'em, 4 movies I get for the price of one.

But I want success for the little muthafucker

i don't care if a films been made for 50p or 50billion. As long as its a good film. I want films only to make money to ensure the filmmakers have continued success to do what they wish.

Captian Kirk of the USS Enterprise once said "I've been up to my nuts in guts all night and I'm ready to explore this vast black and sparkly thing we could space. Engage..."

Which I think sums up this discussion perfectly

What?

Come on man! Get with the knowhow from the homiaw!

Dude all I'm trying to say is that life is like a ball and if you don't bounce it every so often then it gets left in the garden until it looses its air.

So in this case the ball is Edgar Wrights film and I am the air. And withoutme, he couldn'tmake his films. So when he gets 100million bucks to make a film... we can all bounce.

Do you get where I'm coming from now? I've honestly tried to make this simple for you weird film hating psychopaths... :-) ;-) :-)

Antman could be good - the biggest obstacle I reckon is the name "AntMan" - get that one by the audience and you should be OK. but Antman does kinda lend itself to comedy first and foremost - hard to believe with Wright at the helm and Cornish writing that it isn't going that route.

Henry Pym was a really well realised character - with Matt Murdock and Peter Parker he was amongst the arliest of the fallible heroes. I'm sure he died as well didn't he? Any roads - he's one of those deals where the alter ego is more important than the hero.....fuck if they can pull Tin Man Stark off then Pym is no different.

....just keep coming back to that name though....bugs the hell outta me....oh....oh...OH! See! See how easy it is to do?

Good Luck Edgar....
