I liked Freddie Highmore in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well, although the hype Depp gave him beforehand may have colored my opinion when I was watching the film. Incredibly affectless for a child performance.

Seconded, Vicar. She makes an interesting counterpoint actually to the young actress Ana Torrent who gave a beautiful and innocent performance in Erice's magisterial Spirit Of The Beehive - the film which Del Toro acknowledged was a direct influence and inspiration on Pan's Labyrinth.
