I saw him as dark, too. My sister insists he was blonde as that's where Lyra got her haircolor and it was Mrs. Coulter who was a brunette.

Either way, they should break out the hair dye for someone.

Oh and no one calls me a n00b! Don't bump all the DM threads at once then, wankers. ;)

So. We know this trilogy won't be killing God, but will it:

Feature two homosexual angels screwing in front of a 12-year old?

Have two kids engaging in heavy petting, cuz, you know, that's how humanity gets saved?

Feature a main character bleeding profusely throughout the entire second movie?

Feature a PC that can contact angels?

Feature characters pausing in the middle of the action to complain about organised religion for ten minutes at a stretch?

I'm sorry; I've tried to hold off expressing my feelings about these books but I just can't. There are very few books that I can say did serious emotional damage to me; "The Amber Spyglass" was one.

I found The Amber Spyglass fairly traumatizing--mainly the part where Lyra leaves Pan on the dock to the afterlife. I was a total wreck as he turns into a puppy...

I get the feeling the emotional trauma you two went through is of a different kind.

I found the Amber Spyglass to get bogged down in the world of the dead, and the final battle very anti climatic to what it was being built up to. But then it is Lyra and Will's story, not Asriel's and as such I think it works remarkably well.

I just had the best idea for who should be playing Mrs Coulter...Michelle Pfeiffer, now that would be perfect casting.

Started reading the book, but I think I'll just wait for the flick. Re-reading LOTR just before the movie came out is still one of the biggest mistakes I've made as a filmgoer. It had been so long since I read it that I had forgotten much. Re-reading the whole thing prior to the film release made me far too aware of what was missing from the movie. I don't want a similar experience with this.

Looking forward this one

So what's the premise of this? I've read through a bunch of the synopses in those links at the beginning of the thread but they're too confusing. What's the basic premis and main plot all about? And are the books reall that good?

Girl in a parallel universe (think victorian and 30's england design and technology but refined over 60 years so it's at a level with ours...uh sorta.) embarks on a quest to find her frined who's been kidnapped by a mysterious group of people called "gobblers". The second and third books deal with the girl, our reality, her reality a boy from our world. The Church and a war against heaven.

Yes they really are brilliant, flawed but brilliant.

well, you could try reading this post, where the lovely Lyra lays out what the book is all about.

or, you know, you could read the wiki article.

'Official Movie Website' has appeared - certainly worth a look for the pre-viz and concept art - very nice cast shots.

There's no previous mention of the site in this thread, so I hope it's not old news - nice flash of the Alethiometer.

Not much to report really but I thought for those who are fans they might like to know that I visited the set of His Dark Materials on Tuesday! :-)

I was at Shepperton Studios in UK where I was prepping a project and I couldn't help poke around! :-)

THey have taken up every sound stage and there are some VAST sets! Which is good! But at least two of the stages seem to have been dedicated to green screen... which seems a shame and a waste!

There were lots of kids in wierd blue "hospital orderly" kinda outfits covered in cleanfilm! Weird!

I saw an army of marching Mongolan soldier types, they stopped right next to us and their patrol leader made them show off their obedience! :-)

No sign of major cast members but some lovely sets being built! :-)

Hope they get given the right treatment on screen... I saw some storybaords and animatics and while it would be wrong to judge on them... I'd hate it... there weren't any mind blowing visuals... but it might just not need them!

I feel naughty... :-)

I was meeting up with a visual effects supervisor to work on some stuff for a project I'm doing.

And I felt like I'd be doing you buys an injustice if I was at a studio and didn't look around!

If you guys want to take a look some time, all I'll say is this: secruity is non exsistant!!!! :-)

Park up on the road outside and walk through the gates... heh heh! Just a tip...

But anyway, after out meeting I went walkies!

I just hope its visual flair matches some of the artistry going on...

I love Sam Elliott as Lee, but I'm really disappointed in Daniel Craig. Asreal needs to ooze charisma and strength, he commands a rebel army! He looks like a dull professor.

Not to mention bears ripping out each other's throats, a golden monkey and a snow leopard getting hot and heavy, Mrs. Coulter torturing a witch to death, and ohh yeah, bare breasted harpies. God I love these books. I totally agree that they're seriously flawed though. I have this insane hope that the movie will somehow be able to get in the most brilliant parts of the story, but if they're gonna whitewash it...*sigh*

Its all good to me. The tone and location of the story does change quite dramatically in the second book, so a new screenwriter needn't be a bad thing, plus hopefully its all about adaption and maybe we'll get more of the books flava in the process especially considering he did such a fine job with his adaption of Thomas Hardy's novel "Jude the Obscure" for Winterbottom's "Jude".

I'm not worried about a different screenwriter on The Subtle Knife. Weitz is up to his eyes in post right now and New Line wants a script ready to go in case The Golden Compass is a hit. They're just covering their bases.

So I was workign on a Strongbow commercial today, and got chatting to 2 people who were working on The Golden Compass. One was Eva Green's stand in and she had this to say...

She did around a week's work on this film last year, standing in for Eva Green amongst other scenes, on the actual balloon. Whilst she said that so far, Eva Green hadn't even made eye contact with her or said anything to her (heh, I ain't judging, it could be for many reasons), on the other hand, this Stand In absolutely loved meeting Sam Elliot, the pilot ofthe balloon, who was the complete gentleman to her, and went up to her, shook her hand and introduced himself to her, and was a very open and talkative person, who not only was friendly and charming to her, but also liked to hang out with other members of the crew and eat with them, whilst other actors wouldn't have.

She also said that the Director, Chris Weitz, was a complete gentleman and a very open and extrememly nice and even shy person, and she felt it was very easy to work with him. She was very alarmed and moved by the niceness of these 2 men.

What this Stand In had heard about Daniel Craig was something vague about how he had filmed some or all of his scenes for this film, then went to do Bond, then came back to either finish off the rest of his scenes or to do some kind of pick ups. I found this hard to understand as I didn't think that Craig could have filmed Bond in between shooting this one film. But anyway, prior to Bond, Craig was a very down to earth, nice guy, but after he had been away on Casino Royale, for whatever length of time the 'break' in Golden Compass was, when he came back to Compass, he was a lot more confident and a bit more controlling. Apparently the people around him, all could notice a big change in him. What do you expect from playing what may well be the coolest and hardest man in the world though? But basically, Craig was a likeable guy.

Spoke to someone else on the way home, who had worked on Golden Compass as a 'Film Extra' and then had a proper speaking part, which he was dissapointed to say would stop him from working on the rest of the films. Anyway, he stated that regardless of this first film's performance at the Box Office, they ARE going to continue to shoot the remaining 2 films back to back, and that production would continue as soon as possible, as they need to keep the lead actress at the right age in these movies. So no worries or question about wether or not this film series is going to continue.

He also said that people have said that His Dark Materials could be even bigger at the Box Office than Lord of the Rings! How about that?

If you wanna use this story, call me Cpt Kirks 2pay. A lovely gentleman.

Mori's set visit to 'The Golden Compass'.

I'm just now finishing the third book in the series, and I'm really interested in in people's interpretation of the religious and philosphical content, and how much of it might possibly survive into the film adaptations - stuff that comes up in Mori's article. I know a few Zoners have claimed that these books are anti-religious or anti-Christian - (ZZS, who would have thought it?) but I don't really agree. I think there might be a book thread for this, checking for it now and I may re-post.

Who keeps on editing my posts everytime I say something romantic about girls that I love? All I said what that Eva Green did things to me here that make me go.. aah forget it.

With Mod free speech censorship like this, I take it that you don't want me to tell you the story that a hot blonde actress told me on the set of a Churchill advert today, about how she not only got a part on David Cronenburg's new movie, 'Eastern Promises' but how she ended up doing a lesbian kissing scene for him.

I got her number for AH's upcoming films, but she's busy this weekend, sorry dude. I was gonna post it to people who might have work for her here, but seeing as I'm censored, I guess I'll keep it for myself.

there's a download link in the talkbacks, but I'm not sure that's strictly legal.

Iorek needs to be bigger - there are liberties being taken in the way that Lyra's world is being shown... but I guess this kind of thing is inevitable in a film adaptation - certainly didn't horrify me. There did appear to be what looked like a horse-drawn cart type vehicle being propelled by a gyroscope thingy!? but on the other hand, the Zepplins looked pretty good.

OH MY GOD

That looked fucking excellent, it's got me really excited. Ok I agree a few things looked incogruous with the boojs but holy fuck those shots of Iorek and the Northern Lights and the production design looks wonderful. And Dakota Blue looks pretty strong for Lyra, she seems to have that dynamism and fearlessness.
Elitism is positing that your taste is equivalent to quality, you hate "Hamlet" does it make it "bad"? If you think so, you're one elite motherfucker.
