It's much less militaristic than the later movie costumes. And also much less like engineering overalls than the later TV ones.

The updated cloud effects are fantastic, they just map out the skeleton of what used to be there.

The movie is much more powerful in respect of that effects update too, you can join in with the awe and bewilderment of the crew.

The first look of the outer core - that really is some visionary design.

the flypast over the top ( from 5000 meteres! ) is amazing, so organic and industrialised, a perfect mix considering what lies at the centre.

This is where Goldsmith's score really starts to make you tingle, the overbearing deep pulses............................................ .......OH SHIT - ENERGY BEAM!!!

I was never too sure what the Vger ship was supposed to look like before the updated effects were put in. The crew mention it, you see a little graphic near the end..otherwise it was slightly misty all the time.

This gives it that much more defintion, but leaves intact the sense of mystery.

i cant get enough of sulu.

you know, i think (thanks in large part to howard stern) that sulu is starting to get his revenge on shatner. i went to see donnie darko on saturday night, as part of my local midnight series. this saturday, they are showing star trek 4. they showed the trailer for ST4 before donnie darko, and you know what? the first time sulu came up on screen, the whole audience started cheering. i couldnt fucking believe it. all of that bile, and those sour grapes in takei's autobiography. i thought it pointless, as the heyday of this cast had come and gone. but now george takei, and the sulu character have taken on a whole new meaning for a whole generation of people, and i think shatner is beginning to see his own comeuppance. seriously, shatner is a larger than life personality. but i have never heard a theater blow up for ANYONE involved with star trek like they did for sulu.
