Fantastic impressionistic imagery of the forest and meadow.
The use of shadows, light, landscape is still amazing to view.
The murder of Bambi's mom (that heart-stopping moment when the shot is heard...)
And Thumper the Rabbit!

I watched Cinderella a couple of days ago. I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I was suprised by how much of the movie is taken up with the mice. It's gotta be half the movie, easy, maybe more. Sure it was entertaining, but what did most of it have to do with the core story? But then, let's talk about the core story. That half of the movie was kinda boring, save for a few choice moments. Overall, the movie was pretty dry, IMO.

Definitely a rental, not a purchase.

Beauty and the Beast is the most modern "classic" Disney film, and by that I mean when you watch the older flicks like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc. B&tB falls right in line with what Walt Disney himself probably would have wanted. Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite Disney film by far, with the likes of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, The Fox and the Hound, Pinocchio, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame not too far behind.

I just rewatched The Hunchback of Notre Dame last night. What a wonderful movie. The songs actually push the story forward, the characters are vivid, the story is compelling (which I guess makes sense since it was adapted from a classic of literature), the music glorious--I love the hell out of this movie! Watching it made me sad that Disney is no longer doing 2D animation. It's not the art form that's flawed, it was the crap they were turning out towards the end. And so what if there isn't ever another 2D animated film that ever makes Lion King money? There's still a market out there for good movies, whether they're live action, computer animated, or hand-drawn. A good movie is a good movie, dammit!

I think it was canned long ago when they decided Sweating Bullets ie Home on the Range would be their last traditional film.

HAS to be alice in wonderland.

It is a testament that when thinking of alice I bet you imagine her with blonde hair and a blue and white dress, even though she originally was a brunette. Also eerily the 13th motion picture.

Pinnochio is classic fairytale stuff, quite dark in parts and even moby dick stuff is referenced.

Dumbo is amazing, freaky pink elephants. I still love pink to this day?

I am less fond of the later films, I can see the artistry in lion king and aladdin, but after that hey become fluffy and useless musicals.

No edge like in the earlier films, which are more akin (usually based upon) old fairytales.

They become tosh like the live action films such as free willy.

I have only just started to come to terms with the fact I like these films as I was deeply traumatised as a child. My mum used to go to america to get Mickeys autograph. She has a phone that is a model of mickey mouse over 1 foot tall, that goes 'aha you got a phone call' loudly. It broke. She got a new one. Instead of family photos in the living room we have stills from disney films. One is of cinderella.

I love Donald Duck but much like Oliver on Green Acres I sympathize with his plight and thus get agitated when the world seems against him which is most of the time.

There's not a lot of things that this cold hearted bitter and worn out, but mostly blown out by chicks Zoner finds magical or truly spiritual in life and in movies anymore, but Pinocchio is one of those few things. I find it more than a movie or a cartoon, it is far too special.

Hercules for me, Hadies is a great character as well as looking cool as with the flaming hair. His henchmen Pain and Panic arenot bad either. The series wasn't to bad, bringing in all the old mythology and such....

Oh Kirk don't be sad at the spiritual state of animated movies today, just watch Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle and be done with it. (I'm sure that you already have though seeing the amount of posts and experience under your avatar).

I've always wanted to see The Fox and the Hound. I was given a book of it when I was a kid, and I loved it, but never got to see the movie.

Right now, as it stands my favorite Disney cartoon would be Sleeping Beauty. I'll have to finally see Fox and the Hound, tho.

You know something? I've never even seen it all the way through. But my mom gave me the soundtrack album when I was about seven and I played it ALL THE TIME! I still love those songs. That's why it gets my vote - the songs that made me happy when I was a little kid.

Though Bambi gets points because of Thumper, who may be just the most adorable animated little fuzzy animal of all time.

Bizarre, I remember replying to this thread when it was first done and yet no post of mine exists!!

Without a doubt, my favorite is The Little Mermaid. It came out at a very impressionable time for me and Ariel had red hair, which sold me on her completely. I watched the new DVD version of it over winter break and loved it just as much, the end still makes me all sniffly. Even as a kid, I was not sure drippy Eric was worth giving up the ocean for. "Part of Your World" is such a beautiful song though and the scene where she sings to him on the beach--so romantic.

One of my not-so-secret wishes is to be Ariel at Disneyland.

But it's closely followed by Sleeping Beauty, just for the animation style. It's so sharp and angled, it looks like a medieval painting set in motion. Which is what it was supposed to look like. As opposed to Eric, Prince Rillian was definitely a proper hero, he deserved better than the bland Aurora. Maleficent is an awesome villain too.

I love Bambi too but it's too hard to watch--I always loved "Love is a Song that Never Ends" as it's quite a piece of Renaissance bombast. Oddly it's the one Disney movie I've ever collected anything from, I have a ton of china figures from it. It started because my grandma gave me a Thumper statue that is from the original movie release, he's really neat. I actually found a retro-style Bambi one year at Disneyland to match him--and one day the shelf they were on collapsed, and you might as well have shot Bambi's mother all over again. Thumper was almost unscathed (he's old enough to survive) but Bambi was quite broken up...my mom did manage to repair him but it was never the same.

Robin Hood is one of the best comedies though--the Scottish chicken! Sir Hiss! Hehehehehe.

The Lion King easily. I dont really like most of the Disney movies which makes me slightly evil. Mulan was pretty cool. And like others have said, Robin Hood was really fun and I enjoyed The Rescuer movies.

I honestly cannot stand Sword in the Stone and Peter Pan. I respect most of those movies for their creativity, I just dont like them.

And Nordling, your totally dead on about Bambi. Its nice to see it because it uses a lot of dark colors and there's not a lot of singing and noise. So sad though....

Exactly, as much as love Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hunchback and many other modern Disney Classics, to me, nothing beats the real classics like Snow White or Bambi or Pinocchio. I just love the style these films carry. You realy feel the artists animation in every frame. From the characters till the backgrounds. There's so much love for details. The openingscene of Bambi is among my favorites.

I also realy miss the classic shorts from Donald and Goofy. It's just a shame they don't make them like that these days. I'm glad Lasseter is reviving the animated shorts at Disney. Would love to see a (few) Donald short in front of a new Disney animation. Mr Duck Steps Out for example is still brilliant. Same goes for Warner and the Looney Tunes. Give us quality shorts again!

Of all the "CLASSIC" disney movies.. I think Robin Hood was the best...

after the 80s the quality kinda went down, except for Oliver and Co.

90's was a diffrent beast all together... Everything was a song and fucking dance number.. (ok.. Aladdin was probably the shining light of that time)

But I think these two movies during the "END" of the drawn age dont get the love they deserve..
