I know AICN's coverage of the weekly dvd releases is about as fresh as Harry on a sunny day, so I thought I'd mention this. There was supposed to be a Hudson Hawk 15th Anniversary dvd out today. I know, you're saying "hudson hawk special edition? come on." but Hudson Hawk is like a car accident, so bad that you just can't look away. I was planning on picking it up. But, then I find out that Sony quietly cancelled it! Not to mention that they also cancelled an upcoming Fish Called Wanda special edition. I mean they must have already pressed 'em and packaged 'em, and now they're just not going to release them? That fucking sucks.

This is not so bad a movie as everyone likes to pretend. Unfortunately it was a very expensive rather bad movie and so, like Ishtar, it has become a symbol. But being less bad than we remember doesn't mean it should get a special edition. Does it even have enough of a following to be considered a cult picture?

Explorers is a potentially great movie about the wonders of childhood but it was spoiled, and we all know how. Princess Bride I enjoyed but I never understood the fascination it holds for people. Goonies is dumb. Monster Squad isn't very good at all.

I too like Hudson Hawk, though I can understand why people would hate it. It sometimes goes too far into the realms of cartoony (James Coburn beating up Bruce Willis at the end being a scene I can't really stand to watch).

There are some great over the top performances in there from Richard E Grant and Sarah Bernhard as well as possibly the best work David Curuso has ever done.

Dino's Princess Bride comments make me sad...

I wanted to like Hudson Hawk so badly because my gf at the time was in love with it... And I couldn't get into it at all...

I think it's the direction. If they had played everything straight - total deadpan - it would have worked for me. Instead it feels like everyone is far too aware that they're in a "comedy".

I can understand why people like it though.

Because they're crazy.
