Ok, please explain to me the Black Panthers "new"

Postby Deathlok2001 on Thu Nov 01, 2007 10:02 am

When the new BP comic started out as a MAX title, it was fine. My understanding was that it was outside of current Marvel continuity. Then it was moved from the MAX line. Now his origin is all $#@!@#$ up! Earlier issues had a Batroc running around at the same time as the original was running around in civil war. He meets Klaw for the 1st time. wtf?

Apparently, he did not 1st meet the FF back in FF #54 or whatever it was....

No idea what you're talking about, especially since I stopped reading when Reginald Hudlin took over. Way to make Wakanda look like a bunch of smug, arrogant assholes, Reg!

The Black Panthers have a comic?

Is it part of Marvel's new "Ultimate Malcolm-X" line?

Well, what I was saying is that when it was a MAX title, then fine. It was out of continuity. When they removed it from the MAX line & put it in regular continuity, then the trouble started.

Black Panther has met the villain KLAW several times, yet in his current book, it is the 1st encounter with him! wtf?

@Deathlok - ah, I gotya.

Yeah, Hudlin sort of threw out the baby with the bath-water a little when taking over the franchise; he and Romita Jr. sort of went the Ultimate route with their take.

However, the rebuilding of the characters and Wakanda as a nation are far greater than their previous incarnation, IMO.

Priest wrote some fun stuff, but his villains were toothless, and Wakanda was a joke. I, for one, like the new version much better than the old. Is it 616? Nah, but that does not matter to me; I will take quality over continuity any day.

If you don’t like the current trajectory of the book, try picking up Marvel Zombies…wherein T’Challa is kept alive and eaten one piece at a time by a zombie Hank Pym…reading this may allow you a greater pleasure in saying, ‘fuck continuity, let’s read something fun’.

If Marvel would just come out & say " This is Ultimate BP, " then fine. Everything else is more or less fine.

It is not as buggered up as current DC continuity.

But if it does not matter, then why bother with anything?

There is no excuse for sloppy writing.

Well the Black Panther is a cool character, but his current comic and the whole crossover with the Fantastic Four are tedious. Not to mention his boring wedding to boring Storm. guh.

Perhaps the Black Panther works best as a supporting player in the Marvel Universe at large. Much like Namor or Professor X. None of these characters NEED their own comics.

In the long-term continuity clearly doesn't matter. Every comic character has been rebooted, rejiggered and rewritten. Over time most people forget, don't care and, if they like the character that much, move on and evolve with them.

Writers or at least GOOD writers can incorporate a characters previous history & still weave a good story. Case in point being Alan Moore & Swamp Thing.

Not much of a case in point, as Moore retconned Swamp Thing from his first issue with the character and fairly drastically changed things.

But true, the stories were better.

How come Black Panther and ROM never teamed up? Seems like a no-brainer. For that matter, how come Black Panther and Man-Thing never teamed up?

If you read the current Black Panther, you know that there have been many Black Panthers.... it was sort of pasted down from generation to generation. SO the name Black Panthers fit!

Let me tell you about that; they went to one fucking meeting in Berkley, '66. That gaddam Triffid burned about 20% of the attendees right off the bat. So, ROM knocked him out; only sensible thing to do, as the fear was mounting and Old Leafy could not get his shit under control.

So, what did ROM get in return for this? A 'thank you'? A "wow, we could have all burned to death but you saved us, ROM"?

No.

ROM got his metal ass kicked in, and also made it onto the FBIs list of 'Individuals of interest'. Yeah, ROM has a file with the feds, and they are still tapping his communication array. ROM can't even take a piss without some DC technocrat knowing what color it is.

ROM still has not heard from Man-Thing...as the Panthers were trying to drag him from the room, the last thing ROM saw were two newer Panthers trying to roll Man-Thing up in a JOB 1.5.

Oh, and Deathlock - re: continuity - I was speaking in a very large scope when saying that continuity is not all that important. For example, I don't think writers and artists should be hemmed in by the character direction choices someone else made 20 years ago. Contrary to that, I think continuity in a run is important. If that makes sense.

Bad editors.

and @uni: impampilash.

I can just imagine ROM and Man-Thing chilling out and one of them (ROM) saying, "We should get our shit on with the Black Panthers. You know, make a difference and all that shit." Man-Thing would respond, "..."
