The Golden Zods: Music (w/ Winners & Year End Lists!)

Sigur Ros is the greatest living band. Discuss.

Funny story though. One of my friends dad worked for CIA. She was talking to his gf who he had promised to take to his house in the netherlands. She thought her dad was full of it just trying to get into the womans pants, but nope turns out her dad does have a place in the netherlands and just never told anyone.

What do you think of it?

Just started listening, but I'll be back to chat on it at some point soon - it's really good.

Seriously the dude makes perfect pop songs. I love all his albums but this one stepped up production wise and really helped his craft not hindered it.

Glad to hear you are liking it though.

Check out some of the archives of the "All Songs Considered" podcast on the NPR site. Jens played guest DJ a few weeks back. They played a few snippets of his stuff, and I've got to say I'm intrigued. I'll have to check out the full-length.

Awesome more people digging the Jens! He puts on a great live show too. So much fun with everyone singing and dancing.

It's a bit like listening to Don Campbell or Gene Pitney at first - lush orchestration, but I understand comparisons with the likes of Belle and Sebastion as well.

Is 'When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog' a better place to start with this guy?

"Ohh silent Jens" or "When I said" are both good starting points. Make sure to listen to the song Maple Leaves though, that song is amazing.

Yeah it does have a Belle and Sebastian feel with it being twee and the lush orchestration, but his older stuff is less lush and more lofi sampling. All of it is great though.

I got no idea why nobody told me that LCD Soundsystem released a new album this year. I seriously have to get it as long as I still have some money left.

nice!

I did my noms for that category based on the play count on itunes.

with 68plays, "Before I Knew" was by far the winner...but, to be fair, a good 50 of those plays were courtesy of my special lady friend. And that's not even counting the amount of times she's played it on her i-pod!

have you heard the full length yet Stereo? I know the "official" release is early 2k8, but I figure you 'prolly got it already...

hey, this may be a bit much to ask, but could you (or anyone else for that matter) maybe put a direct link up from HypeMachine or Elbo (rather, whatever blogger posted the tracks) for each song nominated...or at least for that track?

Quicktime is acting all sorts of wonky on my 'puter, so I can't, or else I would've already...

just wait 'til 300 or POTC:AWE win for film...

I (kinda) disagree with some of them as well, but two of my noms ended up winning, which is a higher percentage for me than usual.

I know music is personal - there is no bad music, just music one happens not to like - but I think some of the nominations were a tad obscure for obscure's sake.

Just because something is "mainstream" doesn't necessarily mean you've got to ignore for something cult.

I think the noms were a pretty healthy mix - with an obvious hipster / indie bias.

I think you should give that Battles album a listen, FG, if you haven't already. I was listening to the Kings of Leon last night, it is pretty good.

And I think there's prolly still enough interest and enthusiasm for and 'albums of the year thread' maybe.
