You can really tell how Prince Paul, etc... were really influenced by Steinski. Awesome hip-hop history lesson from this album.
how does the 2nd disc hold up, the mega-mix from 2002? That's a lot of tracks to dl off emusic - it'll pretty much take up all of my dl's for the month.
I wouldn't necessarily say Paul was influenced too much by Steinski - by '83, Stetsasonic had already been around for a couple of years. More of a contemporary than anything else - not to say he didn't re-appropriate DD and Steinski on De La's debut, but that his influences are far greater than one cat.
Shadow, Cut Chemist, Coldcut - now they all suck at Steinski's proverbial teat. Aside from the post-modern mish-mashup brilliance, what really impresses about Steinski is the messages cloaked in the body moving beats.
Either way, that first disc is a great hip-hop history lesson that still, surprisingly, holds up today - either the best reissue of the year, or one of the standout albums of the year, depending on how one categorizes it.
