Yeah, I think it's more aimed at trying to analyse the negative comments that have been made towards the film.

Still a good read though.

shitjet wrote:Well, I'd have to watch it again to write a more elaborate critique here, but the main thing is the down-time between dialogues. It reminded me a lot of what Reloaded suffered: Intense action sequences sandwiched between deep, inctricate, thought-provoking dialogues that didn't give you the time to let it all sink in. Soon after you were immersed in a fucking fantastic action scene. It seemed as if the movie had two modes that weren't very compatible one with the other.

Maybe the issue is more about pacing...

Yes, I certainly relate to the "two modes" assessment of the film. Personally, I think it actually works out rather well since Reloaded is supposed to play out like a "controlled game" anyway (i.e. "go here", "do this", "collect this", etc). I think that was sort of the nature of the film.

Revolutions felt a little more organic in that sense. And I think that also reflects the nature of the film (i.e. no-one really know what the hell to do, so they're winging it as they go along). Revolutions' sense of uncertainty and nihilistic darkness is certainly a part of the film's fabric.

The beauty of the matrix movies was the "layers", as Cornel West put it, in an interview in the Special Features. Some people walk away with 2 or 3. Others with a lot more.

Others walk away with none.

Indeed.

yeah, the second hour of Revolutions really knocked my socks off. In a visual and emotional way, mainly.

the second half of the second act (i.e. the beginning of rev) was dispensable, imo. Either that, or it should've been developed more. I mean, why was the Merovingian so interested in the "eyes of the Oracle"? What the hell ended up happening to him? He was such an interesting character and to be disposed of in the way he was sucked. Also, Belucci's 2 min performance in Rev was more than laughable.

Yes, the screentime of the Merovingian and Persephone was fairly short. But again, if you imagine you're writing a four hour script and you treat it as a single movie, you probably wouldn't think "oh, Merv and Persephone only appear once more after the chateau". Since it's a continuous story, it probably feels more organic when seen from that perspective as the characters appear only as necessary. In a sense, you could say that the Merovingian is the main antagonist during the four hour film's second act.

I personally thought the first half of Revolutions did a lot to add to the depth and emotion of the story. Neo meeting the program family just adds a whole extra moral dynamic...when Neo is standing atop Machine City, he could destroy the Machines with a wave of his hand. But he doesn't do it. When he says "do what you want, and I won't try and stop you", it's because he can stop them. And I like to think that it's the image of Sati that keeps him from doing it, because meeting with the program family was a crucial turning point in Neo's character arc. He begins to understand that "life" is not exclusive to humans.

Sorry, I went on a bit...

don't like personal moments with dialogue sandwiched in with intense action? guess you didn't care for the LOTR trilogy either.........

You're right. Though I think the topic's natural progression from Speed Racer to previous directorial efforts is a fairly natural comparison.

But yes, we should try and keep it more about Speed Racer.

Next comments about Matrix in here are getting deleted. I am absolutely SURE there is a Matrix thread in here for you guys to go and fingerbang. But I am tired of popping in here to read reviews/commentary about Speed Racer and seeing all this Matrix crap.

Not the lack of winkies accompanying this warning.

i dropped the cash this last winter on a 47" HD set but had planned on being a real holdout switching over to Blu-Ray since the upconversion with my DVD player looks pretty sweet on the new set and figured why rush to spend the extra $, BUT after walking out of "Speed Racer" told my kids that it looked like i would be picking up a Blu Ray player this winter to coincide with the DVD/Blu-Ray release since i couldn't see the point in watching it on anything less

Just got back from catching this at the good ol' dollar theatre. While I don't share some Zoners extreme enthusiasm for it, Speed Racer isn't half as bad as the critics (or the box office) would have you believe.

I got what I expected: a movie that's fun to look at, with a story as thin and sugary as a Hershey bar.

Outstanding visuals mostly make up for Speed's kid brother Jar Jar, but this movie went on a LOT longer than necessary.

I'll call it a 6/10, with the FX being the real star of the show.

Watched this last night, I thought this film looked like shit from day one, never seen the cartoon and all the trailers made it look stupid and lame.

And I actually liked the film, thought the visuals were fucking crazy and I actually bought into the Speed Racer world with all it's crazy bright colours. I wish they didn't try to appeal to the younger kids as much as they did, whenever Speeds little bro and the chimp were on screen the film suffered, it was probably more down to the terrible acting from the kid, the chimp wasn't too bad.

Loved the way this was edited and shot and I also loved most of the fighting (there was only one shot of Ricci fighting which looked lame), thought all the main characters (except the little Brother) were well cast, Ricci looked fucking hot, Fox looked pretty BADASS (wish the film was more about him to be honest) and Hirsch was perfect.

So yeah I totally didn't think I was going to like this, it's not without it's flaws (little too long in the tooth in places and sometimes a little too campy) but over all it was fun and cool.

FOR UK SPEED RACER BUYERS:
Since the UK doesn't get Speed Racer until December, and because Blu-Ray is region free, and (to my knowledge) the 3-disc edition is only to be released in the United States...don't hesitate to order the US import from Amazon.com.

Keep in mind that the dollar is doing shit, so if it comes to $30, that translates to about £15 - which is a fucking steal :D

a) Blu-ray releases are no longer region free.

b) Euro people eat the cheap Dollars. From amazon, shipping costs only 7$, this is around 3.50 Euro. I imported Transformers last week for 22 Euro's (it's 35 Euro's in Holland) No import tax below 25 euro item value.

I think this point has been somewhat overlooked in this thread - Speed Racer was visually spectacular - like fireworks, and it's frenzied 'plaid-overdrive cartoon 2001' crescendo is almost worth the wait through it's largely plotless 2 hours running time. All in all though, it was pants.

Brilliantly edited, fantastically composed, commendable portrayals from the cast to fit into the pop-psychedelic world created (even thought they struggled to be engaging as characters - mostly because they had too little narrative dynamic to perform within) ; not much of a story.

Spectacular and fascinating, like fireworks, in my opinion, but if you found the story captivating, then 'cool beans!' for you.

Can't wait to watch it again in Blu Ray, when the narrative and pacing will still suck, but it will be all the prettier.

I'm not trying to take away anything from the positive technical aspects of the film, but the story and characters did nothing for me...leading to my rating of "pants".

I can certainly see why videophiles are anticipating it's HD release, but I can think of better films to show off my home cinema setup.

see, that is exactly the way i feel about SR, except the "can't wait to see it again on blue ray" part.......

That and the fact that I'll only articulate my opinion once, and here in the appropriate thread...

I can certainly see why videophiles are anticipating it's HD release, but I can think of better films to show off my home cinema setup.

I don't get it. What's so bad about pants?

If FG wore a kilt his name would be Fried Mars Bar. Kilts are predominately scottish, as are deep fried mars bars.
...and so forth.

Actually, fried Mars Bars are predominantly Glaswegian.
I've heard of one shop willing to fry just about everything, Twix, Snickers, Curly Wurly, Chomp...

As for kilts, they are predominantly worn by non-Scottish people now days.
They taught us in school that the kilt kinda died out during the war, possibly because all our soldiers were getting bitten to pieces by various insects, possibly because they are really hard to fucking clean, especially if you happen to be in a trench.

Now it's only really seen at weddings & traditional dances.
Well, except for "tartan day", a day that we don't really celebrate as much as say, the Americans.
Strange.

Never the less, I would like to thank Hermanator X, who has single handedly set my country back 100 years.

I believe that place is in Edinburgh. It was featured on 6music a couple of weeks ago during their festival coverage.
