IN 1978 H G Welles' War of the Worlds got the musical treatment from some bloke named Jeff Wayne. I knew nothing about Wayne, but I was impressed with some of the talent he put together for the project: Richard Burton, Phil Lynott, David Essex, Chris Spedding, Julie Covington, Herbie Flowers, Jo Partridge, Chris Thompson and Justin Hayward.
I've always loved Welles' story, so I rolled the dice and bought the thing. Loved it, sides one and, in particular, side two more than the rest. I never tire of listening to Burton talk.
A DVD of the live stage show is now available, complete with a 30ft Martian fighting machine on stage with the musicians. The story is projected on a massive screen, and on stage right is the disembodied, 11 ft tall Head of Richard Burton doing the narration from beyond the grave. ( to be certain, the CGI Burton head is not very good, but it's better than nothing....). There are standins for Julie Covington and the late Phil Lynott and they are adequate, but many of the orginal musicans are here including Hayward, Spedding, Partridge, Flowers and Thompson ( but where was that useless sperm sample David Essex? Like he had something better to do.... ) so let's be thankful for what we have.
The picture on the DVD is nicely crisp, the sound excellent and the director seems to know how to shoot concert footage ( thank you for NOT including shots of the bleeding audience when something far more interesting is happening on the stage).
It appears that the show will be going on the road again in England, Europe and NOT in the US. If you can't make the trip, then this DVD might just be the next best thing.
If you're in the UK or Europe and saw this, confess. This stage show has to be far more effective live than it is on DVD.
Jeff Wayne has a web site where you can check out the WOTWs related goodies, including a 3 minute "sizzler" that will give you a nice taste of the DVD content.

That's a really slick looking box set. I'm telling you, a company could sell me dog shit if it was packaged nicely... :?

Looks and sounds like ELP meets early Genesis meets Rent meets Mr Roboto.

That's one hell of a trip. Better trail some breadcrumbs...
The original album has been nicely remastered and was released in 2005. Well worth the $$$.

If you didn't grow up listening to this, you missed out terribly. It's a masterpiece.

The 2005 remix is very sweet...I love hearing instruments I don't remember.
Then again, I can't remember what I did this morning.
I have a theory about this,
but I forgot what it was.
I do loves me some sci-fi musicals.....

Anyone who loves music can't be all bad, nu?

Human beings are good for only two things: chocolate and music.
Those two are the only reasons the aliens don't land and take our ball of mud.
Like Arthur Dent and his towel, I'm always packing Hersey's Dark Chocolate and some tunes on a flash drive.
The aliens pick me up, I'm cutting a deal. They go apeshit for dark chocolate.
