Thanks for the micro big blue review, certainly put me in the mood to watch it too! I havent seen it yet, and its inclusion in the pack was a bonus. I was a huge besson fan around the time of Leon and Fifth Element, but I just didnt have the funds to buy the likes of subway and big blue at the time. No, I haven't seen it at all yet. I'll probably see it this evening or tomorrow.

Thanks Bloo - picked it up, checked it out and had a real swell time watching it. Very interesting flick. Nice visual style. Of course, knew the ID of one of the "bad men" pretty soon into the show, but what the hell..... Extremely watchable. And had Monica Bellucci. Oh my.

I watched Shutter Island last night. I can't say I liked it very much. It was well-directed, I think, and the cinematography was excellent (though I'm not too good a judge of that), and I was very impressed with Leonardo DiCaprio's performance. But there were two major problems I had with it: First, it's a mind-fuck movie, and I hate mind-fuck movies. By that I mean movies in which for significant stretches of time you don't know whether you're watching the real narrative or someone's dream sequence. It's tough to make a good mind-fuck movie for the same reason it's tough to make a good time-travel movie: the nature of the gimmick makes almost anything possible, so it's too easy to get VERY lazy with the storytelling. If nothing really HAS to make sense, then why bother having it make sense at all? Just dazzle the viewer with some cool-looking imagery and call it a day. I hate movies like that.

Second, I spotted the twist very, very early. I'm usually not too good at that, maybe because I'm usually a fairly passive viewer and I'm not usually looking for a twist. But this time, even though I wasn't looking for a twist, I saw it coming a mile away. That took some of the drama out of the second half of the movie for me.

Also, while I thought most of the visuals were very good, Scorsese fell a little too much in love with shots of long, dark, empty corridors leading to Creepsville. Okay, I get it, that way lies Creepsville. I just wish he'd gotten a bit more creative with that stuff.

I enjoyed it well enough, but I doubt I'm going to watch it again. I should have rented it instead of buying it, I think.

I didn't think SHUTTER ISLAND ever got lazy or cheated and I don't think there were any significant moments of implausibility. Not bad, as mind-fuck movies go. When it was over I didn't feel like things didn't add up or were a bit too unbelievable like, say, THE GAME. Which is also pretty damn good.

I hated The Game with a passion. You know how people ask you how if you were stranded on a desert island and could only take ten DVDs with you, which ones would they be? Well, if the most evil person in history were stranded on a desert island, and I could only leave him ten DVDs to torment him for the rest of his life, The Game would be one of them. Event Horizon would be another. I don't know what the other eight would be.

Cool, I didn't remember anybody watching many of the movies during the French round. I thought that was when everybody had new babies and it was Christmas time and stuff. I like that one too (that's why I picked it), I watch it every couple years. It's a nice mezmerzing slowburn.

The Wal-Mart in the next city over doesn't use the bin any longer. It has a largish display of $5 titles. Ever so much easier.

Popeye (yes, I'm one of 92 people on Earth who like it)
Monty Python's Meaning of Life two-disc edition
Jeremiah Johnson
The Green Mile

I also picked up season one of Battlestar Galactica for $20. That includes the miniseries. Not a bad night.

Wal-Mart bin diving and displays produced for me a 2 pack of Bloodsport and Showdown in Little Tokyo (which this Oleger is ashamed to admit he hasn't seen) and the entire series of Buck Rogers for $15

Eastern Promises for like $7 was available but naked Viggo will wait, Oleg as an LA cop couldn't

Bargain shopping at Wallymart netted me X-Men and X2 on Blu-ray for the sum total of $15. That Buck Rogers set was awful tempting.

Good haul, bro. COLOR OF MONEY is so boss. My local rollerderby team sponsors regular theatrical showings of WHIP IT and KANSAS CITY BOMBER so I end up seeing those movies theatrically every now and then and they never get old.

Good call on skipping THE DEAD POOL. That's gotta be one of the worst ends to an otherwise great series I can think of. I got that box set with all of them, and so I watched them all again and couldn't believe that even though I remembered DEAD POOL being terrible, it was even worse than I remembered from childhood. Usually age at least adds a nostalgic corny value of entertainment to bad films, but not that one.

Usually age at least adds a nostalgic corny value of entertainment to bad films, but not that one.

yeah THE DEAD POOL is horrible, just a total faliure on all levels. How that movie fails is beyond me, but it does.

I only saw the part where Jim Carrey was playing Axl Rose and I was like, "What the fuck?"

picked up some movies to work on collections

FUNNY PEOPLE for my Judd Apatow collection...that and I seemed to be one of the few people to really enjoy it, even if I felt it was disjointed

ALI for my Micheal Mann collection

12 MONKEYS for my Gilliam collection

and THE BURBS because well the burbs is hilarious and I need more good joe Dante...

EDIT: and I just bought cheap copies of the Extended Editions of the Lord of the Rings Fellowship and Towers because I needed those too

IPAMPILASH!

But I can assure you that Clash of the Titans is not worth the money you paid.

EDIT: Unless the film is actually "Turkish Clash of the Titans," in which case you are in possession of a masterpiece.

PALE RIDER at Wally World for $5

THE ROCK for $7.50

and I just realized today that I seemingly own all the Micheal Bay movies sans Pearl Harbor and The Island

It's too bad The Island wasn't a better movie... it seemed like Bay was trying to NOT be Bay, but inevitably failed.

Everybody can tell Bay really cares deeply about what people think of him. It's so obvious he wants to be a guy like Cameron or Spielberg who can make popcorn movies that become classics and also win Oscars. So every now and then he tries something like PEARL HARBOR or THE ISLAND to spread his wings and when he gets panned he just goes back to making stupid messy lowbrow action films and hiding behind his usual front of "critics suck, they don't know anything, my movie made 50 million dollars this weekend, the fans know what's what, so take that!"
