R.I.P. John Spencer of the West Wing

The greatest TV in history is being made right now. The worst TV in history is being made right now.

R.I.P. John Spencer of the West Wing

This was my HOLY SHIT! moment of the day, in a very bad way. John Spencer, aka Leo McGarry of the West Wing (and LA Law and many other projects) has passed away at the age of 58. I loved this guy on the West Wing and LA Law.

He was a brilliant actor. It's a sad day for sure.

in case any of you aren't WW fans, you will probably still recognize this guy. He was my favorite character in LA LAW and in WW. Dammit he will be missed.

That sucks. I've been steadily going through all of the season DVDs of West Wing. What a bad ass he was as Leo McGarry.

I just woke up from a nap and saw this the moment I logged onto CNN.

I am saddened by the loss of such a strong character actor, who was able to carve a niche as one of the finer television characters in Leo McGarry.

If the West Wing was planning to go on before this tragedy, I simply cant see it continue after this. I say this because I feel Spencer was such an integral part of the cast, even up to the future where he would have been vital as Santo's running mate.

The loss of such a good actor at such a young age can only bring you pause. He will be missed by his many fans and Television as a whole.

My condolences go out to his family, friends, and co-workers...
They hate you because they wish they could have seen half the things you have...

yeah, it seems to me that it would be tough for Spencer to play a character who is so unlikeable, but he did it well.

I'm sure he had a fulfilling life. Not to belittle the sad news, but I think The Zone just scooped the AICN main site on the story.

That's a f'n shame.

Here's to you John.

You gave us joy, laughter and at times you made us cry,
Here's to you my old friend; I raise my glass as the rest say their goodbyes.

(I just made that up. Not too bad, not too good.)

CNN's got an article HERE about how it's going to effect The West Wing.

It sucks to think about it, but my only idea would be to have Sam Seaborne replace Leo on the ticket. They're in talks with Rob Lowe to return for the finale already--and it's said to be looking good--maybe they could rope him back for 12 episodes where he'll be close to the center of attention.

Always hate to lose an actor like this, a guy flying somewhat below the radar, doing excellant work, earning the love & admiration of audiences & co-workers... To me Leo McGarry was the heart-meat of the West Wing...the moral compass. Ah shit. This just plain sucks. 58 ( or 59, depending on whose story you believe) is too frakking young. We're missing you already, John....

Master Whedon - I hope you're right about the Seaborn thing. Its about the only solution that would feel...right. I loved West Wing when it was about the people behind the throne ( Seaborne, McGarry, Lyman et al) & really started to lose interest when it became more & more about the president & his wife ( fine actors though they be) & started to careen towards White House Soap Opera instead. This would be a perfect way to get Sam back into the story. I only hope they give Leo McGarry ( and John Spencer) the send off they deserve. First Pryor & then this. Happy fucking holidays indeed....
