David Ayer is rarely guilty of softening up his characters or resorting to cheap endearment devices to compensate for their bad behaviour. It's one of the things I like about his filmmaking. That being said, I don't know how much freedom he has on this project. Probably less freedom than he does on his usual lower budget non-franchise stuff. That shot of Smith hugging the kid makes me expect that Smith's assassin character will be sold with the "it's okay that he kills people for money because he just wants to see his kid again" approach. But I think you'll get a several legit scumbags on the team. I think there's going to be a lot of conflict and betrayal within the group.
