The Fall of Rome?

Postby Flumm on Wed Nov 23, 2005 5:41 pm

Hercules has posted on this on the main site...
This arrived in the Mt. Olympus mailbox yesterday:

After an article in the New York Times (17th November) the second season of Rome is now in question. Pre-production has stopped in Italy and the producers are baffled by the possible "un-greenlighting" of the show. Why is HBO head, Albrecht making such a public statement from out of the blue without discussing with the shows producers when the show has just found it's dramatic stride?

Call me "eye"
The story by Bill Carter in the New York Times discussed the future of HBO's original series. An excerpt:

[HBO chairman Chris] Albrecht announced only a couple of weeks into ["Rome's"] run that he was renewing the series for another season. But in the interview he said, "That ship hasn't entirely sailed yet."

The reason, he said, has nothing to do with how well "Rome" turned out. Mainly, the issue has been money. "Rome" was wildly expensive, costing an estimated $100 million. It initially experienced debilitating production delays, fueling rumors that it was a troubled show. Once it was on the air and was seen to be a quality production, Mr. Albrecht said, those rumors subsided.

But he said those delays meant he had only a short window of time to retain a hold on the actors, which was why he renewed the series so quickly. For now, that means ordering scripts, which will be difficult to write because they need to cover the complicated period following the fall of Caesar.

"The real reason why, even though I ordered the show, we haven't formally gone into production, is how long it's going to take," he said. " 'Rome' won't be back until, at the earliest, March of 2007. Which makes you say to yourself: When I bring the show back, can I build an audience?"
If you can hold of it, read the whole story. It’s great. The final two sentences read like this:

Re-emphasizing just how unconcerned he really is about that competitor, [Albrecht] noted the critical reaction to "Desperate Housewives" this season. "Anybody who knows anything about television," he said, "could look at that show and say: two years, maybe three."
Bandwidth. Predictions. Reactions.

What a dick. You can at least sell DVD's. Fans of the show will be there in 2007 one way or another.

I'm only a few episodes intot he first series, and really like it, but I'm struggling to see where all the money went. To me it seems over exagerated to say it looks like a high end movie quality production. Visually at least, it looks like well made TV show, but certainly not the best I've ever seen. I thought the later series of the Sopranoes had a more cinematic style to them, not to mention Lost, or even Six Feet Under.

I suppose a lot of the production value was taken up with the set design, and the quantity of props they would have needed to make, cause it doesn't seem to me to have been the cinematography. How many episodes where there?

I agree. Wait til you get to the battle of Pharsalus, the showdown between the legions of Caesar and Pompey Magnus....oh wait, they didn't show it. Half the season was building up to it, and they just showed some choppy slow-mo shots of a roman soldier and cut to them returning from the battle. Teh suck.

Yeah, I don't know where the money went either. But the writing and acting is top notch, and I love this show more than I have any right to. So I'm not complaining.

you know, im never hot to find fault in stuff i like (star wars doesnt count) but that whole skipping over the giant battle bugged me too. it wasnt so much that they didnt tell any stories of the battles or anything. i thought perhaps they had a bigger story to tell, and the war was just a distraction. but i felt they handed it poorly. perhaps a longer montage of battle scenes would have been more appropriate. because the way it was, i was like "soooo was that the war or...." but other than that, Rome makes me bust a nut right in my pants....when im actually wearing them.

It woud be a shame to think we may not get a second season of a great show, because they are inefficiant at handling a budget.

And she has beautiful eyes Adam, but the most ravashing women on the planet?

Atia is sexier in a milfy kinda way, but Servilia is far more beautiful. She carries herself with such a grace and dignity. She's heart stopping.

Yup. Cleopatra was very hot. Looked to be a great actress, she had great prescence.

Anyone know who played her?

Ciarán Hinds

The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover

Excalibur

Prime Suspect

I'd never noticed him before, from the small amount of time he's in the Trailer for Spielbergs Munich film he looks like he's going to steal the show. I predict Awards and an Oscar nod if he is in the film for a substantial amount of time. We'll see, the film might get panned.

Oh lord, he's been in so much.

And he likes to mix it up a bit doesn't he?!....

# Miami Vice (2006) (filming) .... FBI Agent Fujima
# Munich (2005) (post-production)

# "Rome" (2005) TV Series .... Gaius Julius Caesar
# Mickybo and Me (2005) .... Jonjo's Da
... aka Mickybo & Me (Ireland: English title)
# The Phantom of the Opera (2004) .... Firmin
... aka Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera (USA: promotional title)
# The Statement (2003) .... Pochon
# The Mayor of Casterbridge (2003) (TV) .... Michael Henchard
# Calendar Girls (2003) .... Rod Harper
# Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) .... Jonathan Reiss
... aka Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Die Wiege des Lebens (Germany)
# Veronica Guerin (2003) .... John Traynor
# Road to Perdition (2002) .... Finn McGovern
# The Sum of All Fears (2002) .... President Nemerov
... aka Anschlag, Der (Germany)

With strange career leaps, it's a close call between Calander Girls to The Mayor of Casterbridge, or Road to Perdition + Veronic Guerin to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, - which almost steals the show. But the best one has to be, from Munich to Miami Vice!

I like this guy.

I like the kid who played Octavian. Remember, he'll grow up to become Caesar Augustus, the first true Roman Emperor, and he'll destroy Antony's army and usher in the Pax Romana. Surely this is what the 2nd season of Rome will be about, and maybe waiting a couple years will allow the actor to be old enough to play the part of an older Octavian/Caesar Augustus.

Looks like Rome Season 2 is in production as we speak. I was wondering about this the other day (last I'd heard, it was still in question) and finally got around to researching it:

Meanwhile, at Cinecitta, the Forum is being spruced up and helmets and leather bodices dusted prior to production kickoff of series two, April 10.

It is being shepherded by John Melfi ("Sex and the City""Sex And The City"), who takes over from Frank Doelger as executive producer, while Anthony Pratt has replaced Joseph Bennett as production designer.

Episodes one and two will be helmed by Timothy Van Patten and Allen CoulterAllen Coulter respectively, both of whom also worked on the first series.

Casting is underway in Britain for an older Octavian to take over from Max Pirkis.

And, while new plot elements are under wraps, Stamp said that Rome will become a desperate and anarchic place due to a famine. Epic will start with Caesar's funeral, have at least one big set-piece battle, and continue to feature lots of nudity.
