Movies/TV Shows Not on DVD

Postby Kilgore on Thu Feb 09, 2006 7:33 pm

I got to thinking about this looking at the 'earliest movie experience' thread, and I started thinking...man, I saw some stuff growing-up that I need to see on DVD, or HD-DVD/Blu-Ray (whoever wins that war) and I started looking...and I realized, there's still some fine flicks that you can't get on DVD...or at least I haven't been able to track them down...so I guess I'm asking, what are you itching to own that you can't get on DVD?

Me...I've got two right off the bat: 'Flash Gordon' (as in 'Flash Gordon...New York Jets!') and Run-DMC's 'Tougher Than Leather', which I've never even seen in it's entirety, but have longed for for what seems forever....Run! DMC! JamMaster Jay! and The Licensed To Ill Incarnation of the Beasties! In a cop drama, kinda! I need some 'Director's Commentary' on that.

I wondered when that cyanide I put in Paul McCartney's wine would kick-in.

It's a great movie for Beatles fans so I hope they make it quick.

Well I just read a Robert Mitchum birography, and as generally happens when you read something like that, you want to indulge yourself and follow up and explore all the work, so I am gagging to see a bunch of stuff that I can't seem to find on DVD... there's too many to mention here, espically the stuff he did for RKO, but off the top of my head...

...a great movie he did in autralia about gypsies called Sundowners, a mexico based western called The Beautiful Country, a surreal family drama called Trick of the Cat. And there's a region 1 only version of The Story of GI Joe that I might end up forking out for, if that counts.

Branaugh's Hamlet is a movie I've always wanted to see on DVD, beautifully filmed with a great soundtrack, just the kind of thing I want to see with a crisp DVD transfer and 5.1 surround sound.

Even though it's not really an oldy, I'm bitter that Robin Hood: Men in Tights still hasn't been released on DVD . . . I've been tempted to buy it on VHS so many times, but I feel like the second I do they're going to announce the damn overdue DVD release.

Face/Off has been out on DVD in a really crappy bare bones for a while, but I've held off on buying it because I KNOW they're going to go back and do a Special Edition of some kind.

I really want Ed to come on DVD. It was one of my absolute favorite shows in recent years, and I'd be plenty happy to put all four seasons up on my shelf.

Monkey Movies!! Now there's a whole thread worth of suggestions. Personally, I think Monkey Trouble should get the deluxe special edition treatment, complete with commentary by Harvey Kietel.

All those TV movies Cronenberg released in the early 70s are overdue a release. And the same goes for Miike's TV movies come to think of it (not just the Masters of Horror one- though that too- but the ones he made earlier on in his career).

Since TV is now included, I would like to see a set for The Equalizer...Edward Woodward was the greatest ass-kicking-old-Brit to ever hit the tube.

And it goes without saying that The Tick animated series is LONG overdue for release on DVD. That show is brilliant, yet unavailable, while asstastic Gimme a Break and at least 3 seasons of Boy Meets World are available worldwide...There's no justice. Honk if you love justice!

Is there any hope for these?

1. The PJ's: This was an excellent claymation tv show produced and voiced by Eddie Murphy! It featured a bunch of folks living in the projects. It was demented and funny. The crack addict "smokey" was awesome!

I aint holding out too much hope cause this is in legal hell. Seems some guy from the Projects is suing cuz he claims he brought this idea to Murphy a few years before and it got turned down. Then lo and behold its a series. Just pay the guy and get this great short lived series on dvd!

2. Pinky & The Brain (Produced by Steven Spielberg) This was an AWESOME cartoon on the WB! Where the hell is it?

I loved both of these cartoons. And you're right Smokey was a genius... I can do a pitch-perfect impression of Eddie's Thurgoode, so it's a bit irritating that nobody's actually seen the program.

And as far as Pinky and the Brain are concerned, "Yees Pinky, we're just biding our time, and then once we get released on DVD we will....TAKE OVER THE WORLD!"

FANDANGO. Kevin Costner's early film with Judd Nelson, directed by Kevin Reynolds.

There was a really offbeat comedy a couple of years ago now, called Garth Mrenghi's Dark Place, about a spoof Horror writer who had written and starred in a cheap, taccy and very low budget schi fi/horror/drama in the 80's, and he's no ressurecting it as a major work for us to see. With each show, you would have Garth, his brilliantly funny producer Dean Learner, and the cast comment about the show, and they would play one of these supposedly groundbreaking episodes... me and my friends loved it at the time, fully expecting it to be a big show, and come out on DVD as few months after it aired, but it seems that it only aired once, and that there are no plans for a release any time soon... although there may be a follow up with the characters in a different format.

Anyways, I highly recomend you get a feel of the show, by visiting

http://www.garthmarenghi.com/

Greetings, pilgrim. I am Garth Marenghi, sculptor of nightmares. I hope you are sitting un-comfortably at your pc / laptop. Congrats: you have unearthed the official website of my imaginata. As many of my readership can attest, I invented the internet back in 1976 with my short story 'Mindgrid'. Many of my predictions, alas, have since borne sorry fruit, and I, too, have spent many troubled hours distracted by erotica. However, the opportunity to revolutionise man's communication with man (and it is generally men) demands that, finalement, this luddite throw his full weight webwards. With a vengeance.

So hold fast, friend, and savour the dark things you are about to uncover. For does not that mouse under your hand feel more like a rat?

I remain,
Your humble fabulist,

Garth Marenghi

WHOO to the motherfrickin HOO!

It seems that my sources where wrong....

Salutations cyber-warrior/warrioress,

I’m firing off this missive to calm my flock o’chill-dren. First off the bat, thanks are due to those of you who continue to blow the torch of Darkplace, notably all at the ‘Save Darkplace’ website. Cheers fellas, keep up the bad work (by which I mean good work). I owe you a figurative beer. (You won’t actually get a beer from me).

The news on a second season of Darkplace is thus. There is no news. Sadly the rest of the tapes of mein meisterwerk are likely to remain chez Marenghi unless the world makes some kind of evolutionary leap and catches up with my vision. And, between you, me and the proverbial, I think I might have taped over one of them with an episode of The Thornbirds. Tant pis, the digital versatile disc is nearing completion and will feature the following terrifying treatlets:

Commentaries to all episodes
Deleted scenes
Test footage
Original ‘One Track Lover’ Single (Extended Version)
Over an hour of extra talking heads
Photo galleries
Original radio ads
Original storyboards and storyboard to scene comparisons
Plus more

In short, it will render all previous DVDs redundant. (And shut down those shameless profiteering sons of bitches on E-bay.) I will let you know the release date as soon as I have it or pretty soon after I have it.

Till then, I remain your obedient shaman, Garth Marenghi

PS. If you were wondering what happened to the mooted repeats of Darkplace, I suggest you write to the Home Secretary.

PPS. If you happen to be in Croatia, Todd’s got a new Taco commercial out there this week only.

PPPS. Do check out my website garthmarenghi.com for new content this week. Spread The Word, pilgrims.

And I just went and lugged my old PC out from the shed, so I could play these...

Save Dark Place - Sound & Video Clips

Ugh, I bet this show is huge by the end of the year...

Anybody remember a show called Mr. Bogus? It was claymation as well as traditional animation. That show was crazy in a tripped-out Gumby kinda way and I don't think it's out on DVD yet.
