Disney+

I figured this new streaming service deserves its own thread. Initial price is 6.99 a month. Which will surely go up within a year.

This never crossed my mind as something I was interested in, but honestly, now that I'm looking at it, I think I may go for this, for a few months, so I can finally watch the marvel movies I never got around to seeing, and the Mandolorian series does intrigue me.

My family will likely be dropping Netflix for this.

They could make a separate streaming service just out of the Simpsons!

I wonder if they'll be adding everything Fox/Disney/Lucasfilm have made. Will they use the obscure stuff, like Where the Toys Come From?

So I just signed in to Disney+, using my verizon FIOS 'free for a year' deal.

I haven't geeked out like this is quite a long time... starting with the Madalorian obviously, but I have missed quite a few Marvel flicks, so I will be getting my year's free worth with this bad boy!

Wow, it didn't take the internet long to find out what Disney+ is doing wrong, did it?

I toyed around with it last night, watched the Mandelorion (only one episode available), and started watching Rogue One for the hell of it.

My early first impressions:

There doesn't seem to be a 'start from here' feature...meaning I got about an hour into Rogue One, stopped/turned off Disney+, and when I came back later in the night, my only choice was to start the movie from the beginning again. This is BAD, as I have to start and stop when I watch movies all the time...

Despite what I was lead to believe, not ALL star wars and Marvel movies are avaialble. No Spiderman movies, no ant man 2, I think two of the avengers movies aren't there (Ultron and the one before endgame). Not all the Thors... lots of gaps. Not the last SW movie either. FALSE ADVERTISING!!!!!!

My experience was less than stellar as well. I went to re-watch The Mandalorian and it kept starting at the last few seconds of the end credits. There's no way to restart or start from the beginning. I had to manually rewind it so I could watch it. I made my kids shut their eyes so nothing was spoiled.

I think that means when you watched it the first time, you didn't let it finish all the way. so when you went back, it picked up from where you left off.

The GREAT feature on Amazon Prime is that no matter what device I'm watching on (TV, ipad), wherever I stopped watching a show, starts right from that point the next time I tune in. I watch when I'm working out on my smart TV, and later on in the night I can pick up right where I left off on my ipad. Disney+ doesn't seem to have that streaming feature (yet).

It wasn't going to be perfect right out of the shoot, so these kinds of things I would hope get resolved.

Nope, I let it run on the first viewing. Each subsequent attempt automatically started at the end and played just the last 3 seconds of the credits. It's the worst thing I have to say about the service, and I'm sure it'll be rectified at some point. So I guess that's pretty good.

that is interesting. i'm guessing he was cast for flashbacks? because they could put anyone in the suit, and there's no way he's doing the voice.
or maybe he appears in visions from Kenobi's mind, like Dexter's dad in Dexter. sort of an imaginary figure taunting him with his failures, etc.
it will be interesting to see how much better his acting is when he has a real director to direct him. his acting got decent reviews before Lucas got his hands on him.

Yeah if I had to guess it will be both flashbacks and jedi mumbo jumbo visions.

Shang-Chi is the best martial arts film i've seen in a long time. it's like a cross between Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and [insert Marvel movie title here]. i didn't know anything about this property before, obviously it's Marvel's attempt to do a kung fu story. the story itself isn't anything very original or memorable or groundbreaking, but as an excuse to string together some cool fight scenes, it serves it's purpose. the fight choreography is really impressive. the bus fight reminded me of the subway fight from Spiderman 2 (Raimi's Version) but with more kicks and punches. the ending goes a bit off the rails though, when the kung fu stuff is basically abandoned in favor of a fight between a giant CGI dragon and a giant CGI... something. but up til then, it's a pretty enjoyable film with mostly good performances* and enough action and humor to keep it interesting.

* awkwafina is just plain annoying. she's like if you took Short Round and Kate Capshaw's character from Temple of Doom and combined them into one character. but there are large portions of the film that don't involve her so at least she's not a constant presence. also, i can't decide if it's progressive to cast her in a female role that is completely platonic, not merely reduced to the lead's romantic interest, or if it's sexist to cast her in that part because she lacks the supermodel looks/body to be considered as a possible romantic interest.

** next to the fights, the best thing about this film? the return of Trevor Fucking Slattery! i can't wait for his spinoff Disney+ show.

I agree. As formulaic as Marvel movies can be, this one brought something new to the table: legitimately awesome fight scenes. The one on the bus and the one on the scaffolding feel right at home with Jackie Chan. Tony Leung made for a pretty compelling villain, too.

I agree on most of your points. It was entertaining enough. Started out real strong. I got a little bored in the middle-ish, with the whole village preparing shit. And we all knew the Dad would somehow have some redemption. Nothing really new here, other than some nice ass kicking martial arts.

i think i enjoyed it at least partly because i didn't go in expecting too much. the second half of the film (everything after they get to the magic place whose name i don't remember) is pretty standard stuff, but the first half was fun and different enough that my enjoyment for it carried through til the end.
