The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Weirdly enough, this trailer for In the Heights popped up on the same day:
It looks kind of like West Side Story without the gang fights

I have no idea what this movie is about, but I'm sold.

Elitism is positing that your taste is equivalent to quality, you hate "Hamlet" does it make it "bad"? If you think so, you're one elite motherfucker.

Did anybody else watch this movie on Netflix? I'm not sure what to make of it. It's bananas, but not in a good way. Zack Snyder wrote the script as well as directed, and it feels more like Sucker Punch than Dawn of the Dead. The zombie cargo that eventually gets loose comes from Area 51, and there are UFOs zipping about in the sky for no reason. There are also robot zombies, which are not explained or commented on at all. Netflix wants to make a "cinematic universe" out of this and I think that just raises more questions than answers.so sorry wrote:

I watched the first 15 minutes when they released that before the premiere. I was mildly intrigued, but the fast paced/cut scene intro of characters was probably what kept my interest. I did read up on the plot of the movie later, and it was a hard pass for me. I can suspend my disbelief like a champ, but zombies having babies.... that's a tough pill to swallow.

Don't Look Up, about a planet-killer comet and the world's refusal to acknowledge it.
This is a comedy btw.
I got a sick feeling after watching this because a)a planet-killer comet is totally feasible and b) the world's refusal to acknowledge it is also totally feasible.
This might go down as a Dr Stranglove kinda satirical comedy. I'll laugh, then by the end I'll feel like throwing up.
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
an inevitable humanity-ending disaster and our refusal to acknowledge or try to prevent it? nope, not a climate change metaphor. definitely not a climate change metaphor at all.so sorry wrote:

Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
saw it last night. this movie just shows how hard satire is in the post(?)-T**** era. the president is a cross between T****, Sarah Palin and maybe some Hillary Clinton in there too. is it still parody for the president to make her own smarmy unqualified son chief of staff, after 4 years of a president who made his unqualified daughter and her smarmy husband senior advisors, and nearly made her his Vice President and him the head of National Security? how do you do satire when the reality is far worse than anything you can make up?TheBaxter wrote:an inevitable humanity-ending disaster and our refusal to acknowledge or try to prevent it? nope, not a climate change metaphor. definitely not a climate change metaphor at all.so sorry wrote:

anyway, yeah, this is a totally on-point satire of the global warming crisis (and politics, and facebook/tesla billionaires, and the news media (all of it), and pop culture, etc etc). some of it is really funny, but more of it is just really depressing because of how accurate it is. at least they don't pussy out on the ending... this thing ends exactly how it will inevitably end in real life (though, death by comet is certainly quicker and more painless than what the human species has in store over the next few centuries or however long we manage to hang on for). it's the depressing feel-bad comedy of the year. yay.

Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Not quite sure if this is going to be a comedy or not. I mean, by nature it will be a comedy, but will it be more biographical?
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Always an enjoyable flick.

Knives Out 2: a.k.a. Glass Onion
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
I'm honestly shocked he's not fighting in space yet.
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
this might be the movie that finally gets my ass back in a theatre:
the only thing missing is Sam Jackson showing up and saying, "Enough is enough, I've HAD IT with these muthafukkin' bears on this muthafukkin' cocaine!"

"If all you see when you look at me is a bear addicted to cocaine then...then you don't see ME."
"Alright Shaggy - you and Scooby head over that way. The girls and I will go this way."
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Looks better than Avatar 2, that's for sure.
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
i can't believe this movie isn't being released until feb 24. it's the perfect valentine's day movie.

Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
This could end up being a pretty crazy ass movie, depending on which direction they take it. Not sure yet if its kid-friendly, adult with a nod to kids, or what. Its pretty much impossible to NOT sexualize Margot Robbie in tight clothes though....
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Well that was...something.
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
between this and Cocaine Bear, hollywood is trying really, really hard to get me back into a movie theatre.
it might be working.

Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
i just don't know what to make of this at all:
like maybe a lego movie vibe (even down to the will ferrell cameo) or brady bunch movie type thing?

Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
This is a very puzzling project. First of all, it's written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, two acclaimed indie filmmakers that you wouldn't think would go anywhere near a Barbie movie. But if they're going for subversive commentary it's hard to tell. Certain touches are clever, like Barbie perpetually standing on tiptoes even when she's not wearing heels. Other gags, like the "beach off" scene at the end, not so much.

REBEL MOON: PART 1(!), a magnum opus by Zack Snyder
This looks a lot like Sucker Punch to me (supposedly it began as a treatment for a Star Wars spinoff), but I've underestimated Zack Snyder before.

Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
Sucker Punch meets Dune meets Star Wars meets the 300 meets The Fifth Element meets Dungeons and Dragons meets Warhammer 30000
Re: The Movie Trailers 'Я' Us Thread
With a little bit of Heavy Metal sprinkled on top, something I'm also pretty sure Snyder is obsessed with.
On the one hand, I shouldn't be so quick to judge. Star Wars started out as a pastiche of George Lucas's favorite stories, from Dune to Kurosawa to Flash Gordon, and it became its own wonderful thing. On the other hand, there's the Sucker Punch of it all, which was also a pastiche and ended up a total mess.
I went back and watched this trailer again and some of the dialogue is really rough. I'm not sure Zack Snyder should be allowed to write his own scripts.
